My birth certificate.
At 1st glance, to me, it was an 'o'. And my heart skipped a beat,
it would explain so much.
Benjamin D. Dogwell.
From birth, dogs lives and mine, intertwined. Meant. To. Be.

At 2nd glance, was it an 'o' or an 'a'? Jerry studied the official's signature and said 'a'.
I asked him to compare the 'o' to the 'a' in Benjamin. He took a few moments
and said "take it however you want".
The hospital where I was born in Portland, Good Samaritan Hospital.
I am not a dog rescuer but my years of being the critical assist, the bridge to rescue
in a myriad of ways, qualify me as a good samaritan.
I choose DOGwell.
Or rather, fate chose me.
Woof.

With the prick of a needle time stood still for Pilot. Her neck fur golden and thick where I nuzzled for the last time. Her warmth, her spirit, brushing by my cheek, escaping through my finger tips. Moments of quiet past words. Absence.

Standing near, my center went weightless,
like nothing I’ve ever felt. As if 45lbs. of Pilot, once curled up and tucked into my chest,
chin to groin, was sliced out of me. From my gut, my core, the center of me. The lightest
of tender carvings, from my very being.
When her moment came, Pi re-claimed the soul-jewel that my being coveted, held deep and dear. And she spirited away the part of me that belonged to her and only her; removed, scooped out, silently lifted away.
A love-ectomy. She cannot fold back into me.

Pilots fly. And so must she.
To her next self.
To another state of being.
Perhaps to another being.
Bring your next 'someone'
what you brought me Pi.
Fly my Pi. Fly. Soar.

we are one. love you Pi with all my being. forever.
white flag. in the early morning winter rain, out in the backyard
under the orange tree, on the grass i had planted for her,
we met eye to eye and recognized the inevitable.
we felt it. and surrendered our will.
October 2002 - February 3, 2017

Pilot has been my constant companion. A presence in my life
since the day Jerry and I saw her 3 month old self in a West Valley Shelter kennel.
She chose us on January 10, 2003. Fierce and willful, light and joy.
