 The perfect ride back, 40 minutes of winding along two-lane curvy road, destination Lake Hughes, the Rock In. Bob Seeger blasting. Nothing but blue sky and chaparral as far as the eye can see. It was a long day exercising and bathing Delano shelter dogs; Angelica, Jessie and I were unwinding, breathing easier. Shelter worry fell away with every curve. Feeling good, feeling better. Summer air in the hair, hills of orange and red, Castaic Lake shimmering in the sunset. We'll be back to Delano. Back to those magical dogs. We've seen 'em come and seen 'em go. We fight for them to stay alive. We've got our own kind of fire below. |
